If your last power bill gave you a bit of a shock, there’s likely a clear reason behind it – you just haven’t found it yet. A home energy audit reviews your actual bills, tariffs and usage data to show you what’s driving your costs, and what you can do about it before the next one lands.

Since 2009, Green Moves has helped Australian households understand and reduce their energy bills. Our audits are completely independent, practical, and never tied to selling you a product.

Home energy audit vs. energy efficiency assessment - which one do I need?

Green Moves offers two different services which can appear similar at first glance. A home energy audit reviews your bills, tariff and usage data to explain your costs. An energy efficiency assessment goes further, with an onsite inspection of insulation, draughts, heating/cooling and hot water to identify comfort and upgrade opportunities as well.

Home energy audit

This is a review of your electricity and gas bills, tariff structure, smart meter data and appliance usage. Designed to answer “why is my bill so high?”, you’ll get a clear picture of where your money’s going, whether you’re on the right energy plan, and practical, often no-cost-to-implement ways to bring your bills down.

Energy efficiency assessment

A full and holistic on-site assessment of how your home performs. It examines the home for insulation, draughts, glazing, heating and cooling, hot water and any other item that could impact comfort and cost to run.  It’s designed to answer “how do I make this home more comfortable and cheaper to run?”. You’ll come away with a prioritised upgrade plan for you to action when you can.

What’s included in a Home Energy Audit?

Carried out onsite by a fully qualified assessor, a Green Moves home energy audit involves a physical walk-through of your property. It combines a detailed review of your billing and usage history, including how many hours your key appliances are running. You’ll come away with a prioritised list of practical actions – not just a report full of numbers.

What causes bill shock?

Bill shock usually comes down to a handful of things:

  • A tariff that doesn’t suit how you actually use power
  • An appliance running far more than you’d expect (that old beer fridge in the garage is a classic example)
  • A rate rise you didn’t notice
  • A change in season catching your heating or cooling off guard

A home energy audit goes through your bills and usage line by line to find out which of these is actually driving your costs – so instead of guessing, you know.

Frequently asked questions

The most common culprits are a “rogue” appliance running longer and using more energy than expected, a tariff that no longer suits how you use power, or a portion of usage that isn’t obviously accounted for. A home energy audit reviews your bills, and appliance data specifically to track down where that usage is actually coming from.

Yes, reviewing your tariff structure against how and when you actually use energy is a core part of the audit, and it’s one of the more common issues we uncover, but it’s not always the whole story.

A home energy audit with Green Moves will help you understand your bills and usage. It will give you tariff advice, usage insights, and cost-saving actions from $890.

Find out what people we’ve worked with say about us

Danielle and Green Moves provided a full energy audit report and “Victorian Residential Energy Scorecard” for my apartment. Danielle was very knowledgeable, professional and friendly throughout the process. The report Danielle provided was much more thorough than I expected and prioritised energy efficiency improvements based on the savings versus the upfront cost. Given various improvements possible, this was highly valuable and took the guesswork out of where to direct improvements. Further, the report detailed expected electricity use given the apartment’s appliances and highlighted a large portion of ‘unidentified usage’ that was tracked down to a secondary water heater that I was not previously aware of – switching this off has halved my electricity usage!!

I highly recommend Green Moves.

On the day of the assessment you advised us that our oil heaters in the kids room and our oven were using the bulk of our energy. You suggested we replace the heaters with 400w panel heaters and that we should consider a convection microwave. We did both of those things and didn’t have to spend a fortune either. Got the heater on sale for $30 each and got a convection microwave for under $200. Our average energy usage per day has now dropped from 47.72kwh this time last year to 29.17kwh. We are very thankful for the advice you gave us.

Your simple tips have saved us hundreds of dollars already and covered the costs of the heaters and convection oven.

Was an interesting experience finding out what is using the power in our home. Turned out our fridge was causing 30% of our energy bills and the old plasma TV another 25%. Danielle also gave us tips on how to reduce heating and cooling costs. Good, practical and impartial advice, and not trying to sell us products!

Great service, thank you.
