A Parkdale home’s journey to getting off gas

How an in-home energy assessment helped one household electrify with confidence

Michael and his wife, Cathy, live in a 1950s three-bedroom home in Parkdale. Like many homeowners, they were dealing with rising energy bills and growing concerns about gas, and wanted a clearer, more future-focused way forward.
“We wanted an objective way of understanding how energy efficient our home really was.

Our long-term goal is to get the rating as high as possible, within our means.” Said Michael and Cathy.

Starting with clear, independent advice

Michael and Cathy took part in Kingston City Council’s In-Home Energy Assessment Program, delivered by Green Moves.

The assessment gave them an independent view of how their home was performing and what practical improvements would make the biggest difference.

“The process was professional and efficient,” they explained. “It helped confirm what we already suspected, but more importantly, it gave us confidence about what to prioritise and how to move forward.”

Making the switch away from gas

Following the assessment, Michael and Cathy decided to fully electrify their home.

They

  • Replaced their gas how water system with an electric heat pump
  • Removed gas ducted heating and installed four reverse cycle split systems
  • Swapped their gas cooker and oven for an electric induction unit
  • Permanently closed off the remaining gas heater in the lounge room
  • Then disconnected gas from the home.

The transition was smoother than expected. “There were very few challenges, if any,” they said. “All the trades were professional and efficient, which made a big difference.”

Living in an all-electric home

The changes have had a noticable impact. “It feels great,” says Michael and Cathy. “The house is definitely more efficient to run, and our energy bills are now next to nothing.” Winter felt a little different at first without the radiant heat in the lounge, but the improved efficiency and comfort quickly outweighed that adjustment.

“We’re very happy with the results,” they say. “So much so that we’re now looking at an electric car and home charging, especially since we already have solar panels and a battery.”

Would they recommend electrification?

“Yes, absolutely” they say.

Their advice to others considering the switch is simple: take the time to educate yourself, and work with trusted providers who can give clear, unbiased guidance.

For Green Moves, this project highlights how independent assessments, practical advice and collaboration with local councils can help households make confident, informed decisions, creating homes that are cheaper to run, more comfortable to live in, and ready for the future.
